Overview of Sailing Activities

MYC has a long tradition of members enjoying sailing in company and in recent years this has been combined to include both social sailing (rallying) & racing. Our highest participation was on an annual visit to the Medina Mariners, up stream from Cowes, 46 club boats attended, this is also a great venue for a BBQ. These rally events are a fantastic opportunity to meet other members and talk through how the season is progressing and to discuss future sailing plans.

We sail to most places (or motor) around the Solent from Poole in the west to Chichester in the east, once a year we also have a race/rally south to Cherbourg, which some members use as the start to their summer holidays.

At all our weekend events we encourage members to mingle by having a club boat that we can all meet up on and have a glass or two of the grape stuff, at one race/rally we have had over 50 members on one boat, at this point you may wish to close some or all of your seacocks!!

There are other events at the club which include the annual visit from our great friends in the Gaffers Association, of which some are members of our very own club.

MYC annual events include: Midsummer Madness (June) - club racing, MYC Regatta (July) - general competitive nautical fun activities for all the family, Todd's Double weekend (September) - club racing. These events also usually include a BBQ or club supper and live music entertainment.

During the summer on Wednesday evenings there is club racing round the cans in Southampton Water, start/finish line is the Club's start-hut on the foreshore. Two fleets race with a 5 minute interval between starts and different courses. You can race your own boat and make up your own crew from members, family and or friends or chat up one of the skippers to crew for them.

An evening race is a great way of splitting the week up, particularly as you can have a meal and a pint in our fantastic Club House. We have an annual prize-giving dinner (November) which is a great evening to talk about what could have been and of course complain that your boats handicap is wrong!

There is a popular Cadet section run on a Tuesday evening during the summer months, where youngsters from members' families and the local community are given the opportunity to learn how to sail in a safe, secure, fun environment racing around the buoys. The club has a fleet of Pico dinghies and a Wayfarer dinghy together with two keel boats. There is an annual celebratory end of season BBQ and prizegiving on the foreshore.

Racing is competitive but also very friendly, the socialising after the event is by far the best part, an opportunity to talk sailing! How fortunate we are to participate in such a wonderful sport in beautiful surroundings, a place to relax and enjoy.
